How to Resolve “Password is Required” Error for NetSuite Entities?
This article explains why NetSuite requires a password when modifying customer or employee records with access enabled and how to address related errors.
Short answer
The "Password is required" error typically occurs when modifying the email address of a customer or employee record with "Give Access" enabled without also providing new password values. This can happen in the UI or due to scripts/workflows. To resolve, ensure new passwords are set when email changes, or investigate custom automations.
Scenario
Users may encounter an error message stating "login has no password. Password is required" or "You must provide a password to give this person access to your account" when attempting to save customer or employee records. This issue arises when an entity with "Give Access" enabled has its email address modified without corresponding password updates, or when custom scripts or workflows trigger the requirement.
Solution
The error "Password is required" or "You must provide a password to give this person access to your account" generally occurs when the email address of a customer or employee record that has the "Give Access" flag set to TRUE is changed without also assigning new values to the password and confirm password fields. Here are common scenarios where this error is encountered:
UI-Based Email Change
If the "E-mail" field for a customer or employee is changed within the NetSuite UI without assigning new values for the password and confirm password fields, clicking "Save" will trigger a pop-up message: " login has no password. Password is required". This prevents the user from saving the record until passwords are provided.
Script or Workflow Interference
If the error "You must provide a password to give this person access to your account" appears after saving a customer or employee record, even if the "E-mail" field was not manually changed in the UI, the issue may be caused by a script or workflow configured on the customer or employee record. These automations might be implicitly triggering an email change or a password requirement. To resolve these issues, ensure that when an email address is changed for an entity with "Give Access" enabled, new password and confirm password values are also provided. If the error persists without a direct email change, investigate any custom scripts or workflows associated with the record that might be causing the password requirement.
