How to Handle Large File Uploads in NetSuite Beyond Standard Limits?
Understand the inherent NetSuite limitations for file uploads via scripting and web services, and explore potential workarounds for larger files.
Short answer
NetSuite's nlapiRequestUrl() function has a 45-second timeout, making it unsuitable for large files. While a custom xmlHttpRequest object can bypass this, Web Services imposes a hard 10 MB limit on SOAP requests, preventing files larger than this from being transferred. Users should be aware of these constraints when designing file upload solutions.
Scenario
NetSuite users often encounter challenges when attempting to upload files that exceed typical size limitations. While a general understanding of file size constraints exists, specific technical limitations within NetSuite's scripting and web services environments can prevent successful transfer of larger files, leading to timeouts or rejections.
Solution
There are two primary limitations to consider when uploading large files in NetSuite:
NetSuite's
nlapiRequestUrl()function has a strict 45-second timeout, which is often insufficient for transferring large files. This can lead to unstable limits and timeouts, even for moderately sized files (e.g., 7 MB).
nlapiRequestUrl()To potentially work around this specific timeout, consider creating and packaging a custom xmlHttpRequest object. However, this approach is more complex than using nlapiRequestUrl() directly.
xmlHttpRequestEven if the
nlapiRequestUrl()timeout is bypassed, Web Services imposes a hard limit of 10 MB on SOAP requests. This means that files exceeding 10 MB cannot be transferred via Web Services, regardless of other workarounds.
