How to Use Multi-Select Fields as Plain Text Filters in NetSuite Saved Searches

Learn a specific workaround to enable multi-select fields as plain text input filters in NetSuite saved searches, leveraging join tables.

Short answer

To use a multi-select field as a plain text filter in a NetSuite saved search, select its corresponding join table's "Name" field in Available Filters. This method provides a text input, allowing users to type filter values directly, distinct from NetSuite's multi-select dropdown option.

Scenario

Users often encounter challenges when attempting to use multi-select fields directly as available filters in NetSuite saved searches. The goal is to enable filtering by these values, potentially requiring a plain text input rather than a dropdown selection.

Solution

To implement a multi-select field as a plain text filter in a NetSuite saved search, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the "Available Filters" subtab within your saved search definition.

  2. Instead of directly selecting the multi-select field (e.g., "Building Type"), scroll to the bottom of the field list.

  3. Select the join table that corresponds to that field. For instance, if the field is "Building Type", select "Building Type Fields ...".

  4. In the pop-up screen, select "Name" from the dropdown. This is your join field.

  5. Ensure the "Show in footer area" checkbox is marked.

  6. Add a descriptive label to your filter field; otherwise, it will default to "Name".This method will result in a plain text input field for the filter, requiring users to type in their desired values. While NetSuite offers a "Show as Multi-Select" option for available filters to provide a dropdown, this workaround specifically provides a plain text filtering experience.
