How to Search for Child Records Without Including the Parent in NetSuite

Learn how to construct a NetSuite SuiteScript query to retrieve only child customer records, explicitly excluding their direct parent.

Short answer

To search for child records while excluding the parent in NetSuite, configure SuiteScript search filters that target the 'parent' field, ensure records are active, and specifically exclude the parent's 'internalid' from the results. This method ensures only direct descendants are returned.

Scenario

Users often need to retrieve a list of customer child records, such as sub-customers or subsidiaries, without the parent record itself appearing in the search results. This is common when analyzing hierarchical customer structures or processing child-specific data.

Solution

To achieve this, a SuiteScript search can be configured with specific filters to include only child records and explicitly exclude the parent. The following SuiteScript 2.x code snippet demonstrates how to construct these filters. Note that in SuiteScript 2.x, the N/search module is required for search operations. The filters are defined as an array of filter expressions, which can then be passed to a search.create() call.
