Can a NetSuite Item Be Configured with Multiple Unit Types?

Understand NetSuite's item unit type limitations and how Unit of Measure (UOM) defaults function across subsidiaries in a OneWorld environment.

Short answer

An item in NetSuite is restricted to a single unit type, which cannot be modified after the item's creation. While Stock, Sales, and Purchase Units of Measure (UOM) can be set and default on transactions, these can be manually adjusted. In OneWorld accounts, UOM defaults are global across all subsidiaries, requiring scripting for subsidiary-specific default values.

Scenario

NetSuite users often inquire about the possibility of assigning multiple unit types to a single item. This question frequently arises in complex business environments, particularly within NetSuite OneWorld accounts where items may be shared across various subsidiaries, each potentially having unique unit of measure requirements.

Solution

In NetSuite, an item is fundamentally limited to a single unit type. This unit type is a permanent attribute and cannot be altered once the item record has been created. While an item can only have one unit type, it can be configured with specific Units of Measure (UOM) for different operational contexts:Stock UOMSales UOMPurchase UOMThese UOMs will automatically populate as defaults on their respective transactions. However, it is important to note that these default UOMs can be manually overridden on individual transactions as needed. For NetSuite OneWorld environments, where items may be shared across multiple subsidiaries, the default Stock, Sales, and Purchase UOMs are unique across all subsidiaries. It is not possible to configure different default UOMs for different subsidiaries using standard NetSuite functionality. If an organization requires different default UOM values for a shared item across various subsidiaries in a OneWorld account, custom scripting must be implemented. This is necessary to achieve subsidiary-specific default behavior, as the system's native functionality does not support this configuration.
