How to Prorate Taxes on Freight in NetSuite Invoices?

Learn to configure a tax code and use a server-side or client-side script to dynamically adjust freight tax amounts on NetSuite invoices.

Short answer

To prorate taxes on freight in NetSuite, first create a dedicated tax code linked to the appropriate tax agency. Then, implement a SuiteScript (e.g., SuiteScript 1.0) to calculate the correct freight tax amount and update the relevant shipping tax fields on the invoice record, ensuring accurate tax application.

Scenario

Organizations often need to accurately prorate and apply taxes specifically to freight charges on NetSuite invoices. This requires a method to calculate the correct tax amount for shipping and update the invoice record accordingly, ensuring compliance and precise financial reporting.

Solution

The solution involves creating a specific tax code and then using a script to dynamically set the freight tax amount on the invoice.

  1. Create a Tax code "NJ Freight taxes". This tax code should be tied to the proper tax agency.

  2. On save of the Invoice (or client side script), calculate the proper amount of taxes for freight.

  3. Utilize a SuiteScript 1.0 script to change the relevant shipping tax fields. Note that the direct manipulation of field IDs such as 'shippingtax1rate' and 'shippingtax1amt' via SuiteScript 1.0 may not be the recommended or most effective approach in current NetSuite environments, especially with modern tax and landed cost features. SuiteScript 2.x is the current best practice for NetSuite scripting.

javascript
nlapiSetFieldValue('shippingtax1rate','58'); // This may not be mandatory but can be used for display purposes
nlapiSetFieldValue('shippingtax1amt','5.88'); // This sets the proper tax amount on shipping

The values '58' and '5.88' are examples and should be replaced with the dynamically calculated tax rate and amount.
