Can an Item’s External ID Be Deleted or Blanked Out in NetSuite?
Understand the immutability of NetSuite External IDs once they are assigned to an item record.
Short answer
In NetSuite, an item's External ID cannot be deleted or blanked out once it has been assigned. While an existing External ID can be edited and replaced with a new value, the field itself must always contain a value after its initial population. This ensures data integrity and consistent referencing.
Scenario
Users often inquire about the ability to remove an External ID from an item record in NetSuite. This typically arises when there's a need to clear an existing ID or revert an item to a state where it has no assigned external identifier.
Solution
Once an External ID has been set for an item in NetSuite, it cannot be completely removed or left blank. The system allows for the modification of an existing External ID, meaning it can be edited and replaced with a different value. However, the field will always require a value after its initial assignment, preventing it from being cleared entirely.
