Why is NetSuite’s Location Field Mandatory Despite Custom Form Settings?
Understand how NetSuite's system-wide preferences can impact the mandatory status of the Location field, even when customized on transaction forms.
Short answer
While the Location field can be removed or set as non-mandatory on a custom transaction form, its mandatory status may still be enforced by system-wide settings. NetSuite's 'Make Locations Mandatory' preference in Accounting Preferences or the 'Multi-location Inventory' feature can override form-level customizations, requiring the field on all transactions.
Scenario
Users may encounter situations where the Location field appears mandatory on transactions, even though it has been explicitly configured as non-mandatory or removed from the custom form being used. This discrepancy can lead to confusion and hinder transaction processing, as the system prevents saving without a specified location.
Solution
While the Location field can be customized on a NetSuite transaction form, including making it non-mandatory or removing it, its mandatory status may still be enforced by system-wide settings. This occurs because NetSuite's global preferences can override form-level customizations. To manage the mandatory status of the Location field, consider the following:
Form Customization
The Location field can be removed from a custom transaction form by navigating to Customization > Forms > Entry Forms (or Transaction Forms), editing the desired form, and adjusting the field properties.
Global Mandatory Settings
Be aware that NetSuite's 'Make Locations Mandatory' setting, found under Setup > Accounting > Accounting Preferences > General, or the enablement of the 'Multi-location Inventory' feature, can enforce the Location field's mandatory status across all transactions, regardless of custom form configurations. If these global settings are enabled, the Location field will remain mandatory.
