How to Automate NetSuite Memorized Invoices and Transactions

NetSuite users often seek to automate the creation of recurring transactions, but direct scripting of the memorization process has specific limitations.

Short answer

Automating the creation of new memorized transactions or triggering the memorization process itself via SuiteScript is not directly supported in NetSuite. While existing memorized transaction definitions (memdoc records) can be accessed and edited, the system lacks a scriptable command to "memorize" a transaction, leading to errors upon submission.

Scenario

A NetSuite user is attempting to automate the creation of memorized invoices or other recurring transactions using SuiteScript or CSV imports. The goal is to programmatically define new memorized transaction schedules or trigger the memorization of existing transactions outside of the standard user interface.

Solution

The direct automation of creating new memorized transaction definitions or triggering the memorization process for transactions via scripting or CSV import is not supported in NetSuite. When considering memorized transactions, two primary record types are involved:

  1. The transaction itself, often referred to as the "template."

  2. The memorized transaction definition record (memdoc), which defines the frequency and other parameters for generating the template. While existing memorized transaction definition records (memdoc) can be accessed, loaded, and edited using SuiteScript, the system does not provide a scriptable command to initiate the "memorize" action. Users typically "memorize" a transaction through a specific UI button, distinct from a standard "save" operation.Attempting to edit a transaction record (template) via scripting or CSV and then submitting it with the intent of memorizing it will result in an error. This is because the system expects a specific "memorize" command, which is not available programmatically. Therefore, the programmatic submission of a record as a memorized transaction is not feasible.
