How to Configure NetSuite Commissions Using Alternate Sales Amount

Understand how Alternate Sales Amount (ASA) enables commission calculations based on bookings and collections within NetSuite.

Short answer

NetSuite's Alternate Sales Amount (ASA) field allows commissions to be calculated based on booking or collection values, rather than just billings. This option, when enabled, provides flexibility for commission eligibility, supporting both bookings and collections. Custom fields can also be configured to serve as a basis for bookings-eligible commissions.

Scenario

Organizations require the ability to calculate sales commissions based on bookings or collections, rather than solely on billings, to align commission payouts with specific revenue recognition or sales milestones.

Solution

To enable commissions based on Alternate Sales Amount:

  1. An option can be checked to allow commissions to base themselves on a separate field called Alternate Sales Amount.

  2. When configured, Alternate Sales Amount enables commissions to be done on Bookings and Collections. It does NOT typically support commissions based on Billings.

  3. While Alternate Sales Amount is a primary method for enabling commissions on bookings, it is important to note that custom fields can also be configured to serve as a basis for commissions eligible on bookings. Other standard commission options generally only allow commissions based on Billings and Collections.
