How to Manage Custom Field Tab Assignments in NetSuite

Understand how changing a custom field's tab assignment affects its display and placement on existing NetSuite forms.

Short answer

When a custom field's tab is modified, its position on existing NetSuite forms will not automatically update. Additionally, assigning a custom field to a tab that does not exist on a particular form type will prevent the field from appearing and being movable within that form. Users must manually adjust form layouts or ensure tab compatibility.

Scenario

Users may encounter situations where they modify the tab assignment of an existing custom field in NetSuite, expecting its position to update across all relevant forms. Alternatively, a custom field might be assigned to a tab that is not present on certain form types, leading to unexpected display issues or the field's complete absence.

Solution

When a custom field's tab is modified by editing the custom field record, its position on existing forms will not automatically change. To update the field's placement, users must manually adjust the form layout for each relevant existing form.Furthermore, if a custom field is assigned to a tab that does not exist on specific form types (ex: Items tab on Opportunity forms), the field will not appear on that form and cannot be moved between subtabs. It is essential to ensure that the selected tab is compatible with the form types where the custom field is intended to be displayed.
