How to Retrieve All Files Attached to a NetSuite Record
While direct iteration of the Files sublist is not scriptable, files can be associated and retrieved through custom development strategies.
Short answer
To retrieve files attached to a NetSuite record, direct iteration of the 'Files' sublist is not scriptable. While files can be searched by associated records, custom solutions involve duplicating file IDs using Suitelets, custom records, or multi-select custom fields to enable programmatic access.
Scenario
Users often need to programmatically access or list all files attached to a specific NetSuite record. Standard NetSuite functionality presents limitations when attempting to directly script the 'Files' sublist or efficiently search for files based on their parent record association for advanced use cases.
Solution
While NetSuite's search functionality (including SuiteScript 2.x's N/search module and UI-based saved searches) allows filtering files by the records they are attached to using 'File Fields...' filters or search joins, direct iteration of the 'Files' sublist is not scriptable. To enable programmatic access to file IDs, consider implementing one of the following custom development strategies:
Gold Solution (Suitelet)
Implement a Suitelet screen where users create or attach files. This screen would allow users to select the record and the file, then attach the file via scripting to the record. Concurrently, maintain a list of custom records that store the association between the parent record and the file IDs, ensuring easy access to these IDs.
Silver Solution (Custom Record)
Create a custom record specifically for associating records with file IDs. This custom record can be displayed as a child sublist on the parent record, allowing users to add file associations directly.
Bronze Solution (Custom Field)
Utilize a custom field with a list of Document (files) where users can multi-select the files they wish to attach and associate with the record.
