Why Does a NetSuite Item Fulfillment Not Have a GL Impact?
Understand common reasons why an Item Fulfillment transaction might not generate General Ledger postings in NetSuite, focusing on item types and inventory valuation.
Short answer
An Item Fulfillment in NetSuite may lack GL impact if it's for a Dropship Order, if the items are not designated as Inventory Items, or if the inventory items have no associated cost history or value. NetSuite requires inventory items with recorded value to generate financial postings upon fulfillment.
Scenario
Users may observe that an Item Fulfillment transaction in NetSuite does not generate the expected General Ledger (GL) impact, meaning no accounting entries are created. This situation can lead to discrepancies in inventory valuation and cost of goods sold reporting. Understanding the underlying causes is crucial for accurate financial record-keeping.
Solution
If an Item Fulfillment does not post to the General Ledger, consider the following potential reasons:
Dropship Order Fulfillment:
Fulfillments associated with Dropship Orders inherently have no General Ledger impact.
Non-Inventory Items:
Only items designated as Inventory Items will generate GL postings upon fulfillment. Non-inventory items do not impact the GL through fulfillment.
Lack of Inventory Cost History/Value:
NetSuite allows items to be fulfilled even if they are not physically in inventory or if the inventory has no recorded value. If an inventory item lacks a cost history or current inventory value, its fulfillment will not generate a GL impact. (An exception applies if Standard Costing is in use, which operates differently.) It is important to note that if inventory for the item is subsequently increased with a transaction date on or before the original fulfillment date, NetSuite will recalculate and post the Fulfillment's GL impact retrospectively.
