Why Does Field Sourcing Not Occur in NetSuite’s beforeLoad Event?

Understand the limitations of NetSuite's beforeLoad user event script regarding automatic field sourcing.

Short answer

When setting field values within a NetSuite beforeLoad user event script, no automatic sourcing of related fields occurs. For instance, populating an item field on a sublist will not automatically source its associated price level, quantity, or description, requiring manual population if these values are needed.

Scenario

NetSuite users developing user event scripts may encounter situations where they attempt to programmatically set field values within the beforeLoad event. When doing so, they might expect NetSuite's standard sourcing mechanisms to automatically populate related fields, such as price level or quantity, based on the primary field set.

Solution

It is critical to understand that NetSuite's beforeLoad user event script does not trigger any automatic sourcing mechanisms when field values are set programmatically. If a script sets a field, such as the 'item' field on a line item, related fields like price level, quantity, or description will not be automatically sourced. Developers must account for this behavior and, if necessary, explicitly set all required related field values within the script.
