ANS-0813 · REVENUE RECOGNITION
How Does Changing Item Fulfillment Quantity Affect Posted Revenue Plans in NetSuite?
NetSuite automatically adjusts existing revenue plans and recognition entries when the quantity on an item fulfillment is modified, ensuring accurate revenue reporting.
Short answer
NetSuite will automatically update revenue plans and recognition journal entries when the quantity on an item fulfillment is changed, even if revenue has already been posted. This ensures that the recognized revenue accurately reflects the actual quantity of items fulfilled, with the system generating necessary adjustments.
Scenario
A user has created a sales order, fulfilled items, updated revenue plans, and posted revenue recognition journal entries. Subsequently, the quantity on the item fulfillment needs to be adjusted (e.g., reduced). The user needs to understand how NetSuite handles this change and its impact on the already posted revenue.
Solution
NetSuite is designed to consider updates made to an item fulfillment on the associated revenue plan. The system will automatically generate the necessary adjustments to ensure revenue is recognized accurately for the actual quantity fulfilled. Consider the following test case:
A Sales Order (SO) is created for a quantity of 2 units at a unit rate of $120.
The 2 units are fulfilled.
Revenue plans are updated (it is best practice to run the bulk process before recognizing revenue).
A revenue plan of $240 is created, corresponding to 2 units fulfilled at $120 each.
A revenue recognition journal entry is created for $240.
Now, if the Fulfillment is updated and the quantity is changed to 1 instead of 2:
Revenue plans are updated again.
The revenue plan will now show -$120. This negative amount represents the revenue that needs to be carved out, as the fulfilled quantity changed from 2 units to 1.
A new revenue journal entry is created.
The first journal entry was for $240. The second journal entry will adjust the initial entry by carving out the excess revenue of $120. Ultimately, NetSuite ensures that the appropriate revenue is recognized, reflecting the actual quantity fulfilled.
