Why Does Custom Record Ownership Override NetSuite Permissions?
Custom record ownership in NetSuite grants full access, overriding standard role-based permissions.
Short answer
A user designated as the 'Owner' of a Custom Record Type in NetSuite will always have full permissions to all records of that type. This ownership status overrides any role-based access restrictions. To restrict access, ensure the user is not the custom record owner.
Scenario
Users attempting to restrict access to specific custom records in NetSuite may find that certain individuals retain full permissions despite their assigned roles. This situation often arises when a user, intended to have limited access, can still view or modify custom records that should be inaccessible to them.
Solution
In NetSuite, if a user is designated as the 'Owner' of a Custom Record Type (a field configured on the Custom Record Type definition itself), that user will inherently possess full permissions to all records of that type. This ownership status grants comprehensive access, which overrides any role-based restrictions that might otherwise be applied to their NetSuite role. Therefore, to effectively restrict a user's access to a custom record, it is crucial that they are not assigned as the 'Owner' of its Custom Record Type.
