How to Ensure the “Restock?” Checkbox Functions Correctly on RMA Item Receipts
Understand the critical relationship between the Write-off account setting in NetSuite Accounting Preferences and the functionality of the "Restock?" checkbox for returned items.
Short answer
To ensure the "Restock?" checkbox on an RMA Item Receipt functions as intended, the Write-off account specified in NetSuite's Accounting Preferences must not be an Inventory Asset account. If an Inventory Asset account is selected, the system will always treat the item as restocked, regardless of the checkbox's status, effectively returning the item to inventory.
Scenario
Users may encounter an issue where the "Restock?" checkbox on an RMA Item Receipt does not behave as expected. Even when this checkbox is unchecked, the system appears to return the item to inventory, leading to discrepancies in inventory records and write-off processes.
Solution
To resolve this, verify the configuration of the Write-off account within NetSuite's Accounting Preferences.
Navigate to Setup > Accounting > Accounting Preferences.
Locate the "Write-off account" field.
Ensure that the selected account is NOT an Inventory Asset account. If an Inventory Asset account is chosen for the Write-off account, the system will always process the item as if it were being returned to inventory, irrespective of the "Restock?" checkbox's status on the RMA Item Receipt. This behavior occurs because writing off to an inventory asset account inherently implies the item is being restocked.
