How to Structure Warehouse Zones and Bins in NetSuite?

NetSuite offers flexible options for structuring warehouse areas, including location hierarchies and dedicated Zone records, to optimize inventory management.

Short answer

NetSuite provides two primary methods for organizing warehouse zones: leveraging location hierarchies with dedicated Zone records or utilizing a custom field on the Bin record. For larger operations, understanding the system's location limits and best practices for zone management is crucial.

Scenario

Organizations often need to define and manage specific zones within their warehouses to optimize inventory placement and retrieval. This requires a structured approach to associate bins with these defined zones within NetSuite.

Solution

  1. Utilize Location Hierarchy with Zone Records:

Establish a location hierarchy where a dedicated 'Zone' record is associated with the main warehouse location. Bins are then assigned to this 'Zone' record, providing a structured way to organize inventory within specific areas of the warehouse. If a large number of zones are required, it may be necessary to request an increase in the number of available locations, as NetSuite supports a maximum of 100 locations out of the box with Multi-Location Inventory enabled.

  2. Implement a Custom Field on the Bin Record:

Create a custom field on the Bin record to store the associated Zone. This method offers flexibility in defining zones without relying on the location hierarchy for this specific purpose.
