How NetSuite Calculates Item Quantities: Committed, Picked, Packed, Shipped

Understand the sequential flow of inventory quantities through NetSuite sales orders and fulfillment processes.

Short answer

NetSuite manages item quantities through a series of states: manually entered, backordered, committed, picked, packed, and fulfilled. As items progress through the fulfillment workflow, quantities are allocated, reserved, and ultimately deducted from inventory, impacting committed and fulfilled quantities at each stage.

Scenario

Users often need to understand how NetSuite processes and tracks item quantities across different stages of a transaction, such as sales orders and item fulfillments. Clarification is required on how quantities like committed, picked, packed, and fulfilled are calculated and updated within the system.

Solution

In NetSuite transactions, item quantities are calculated and updated through the following sequential process:

  1. The initial quantity is manually entered on the transaction.

  2. If the location of the transaction and the location of the item correspond and there is not enough item in the location, the missing number of item is inscribed into qty backordered.

  3. All the available items are automatically added to qty committed.

  4. If qty picked is entered, the committed qty does not change.

  5. If qty packed is entered, the same quantity must be picked (it will be added if it wasn't picked before) and the committed qty does not change.

  6. If qty fulfilled is entered, the same quantity must be packed and picked (they will be added if it wasn't packed/picked before) and the committed qty will be reduced by the amount of fulfilled quantity.
