How to Control HTTP Status Codes in NetSuite Suitelets?

NetSuite Suitelets have limited direct control over HTTP status codes, requiring custom error handling within the response body.

Short answer

NetSuite Suitelets do not allow direct manipulation of HTTP status codes within the `http.ServerResponse` object. While successful operations typically return 200 OK, unhandled errors may result in 400 or 500 status codes. Custom error management within the response body is the recommended approach to convey specific error details.

Scenario

Developers often encounter situations where a NetSuite Suitelet requires specific HTTP status codes, such as 403 Unauthorized for authentication failures. However, the platform's architecture does not provide direct methods to set arbitrary HTTP status codes in the response.

Solution

NetSuite Suitelets do not offer direct functionality to explicitly set custom HTTP status codes within the http.ServerResponse object. For instance, attempting to return a 403 Unauthorized status code for authentication requirements is not directly achievable through standard Suitelet methods. The system typically returns a 200 OK status for successful executions. In cases of unhandled errors, the Suitelet may return status codes such as 400 Bad Request or 500 Internal Server Error, rather than a 206 Partial Content for general errors. The only viable workaround is to implement custom error management within the Suitelet's response body. This involves structuring the response payload (e.g., JSON or XML) to include custom error codes, messages, and other relevant details that can be parsed and interpreted by the client application. This approach allows developers to communicate specific error conditions and their nature effectively, even without direct control over the HTTP status line.
