How to Insert New Lines in NetSuite Text Area Fields Using Scripting
Learn how to correctly format multi-line text within NetSuite text area fields by appending a specific character sequence in your scripts.
Short answer
To insert a new line within a NetSuite text area field using scripting, append the 'backslash n' character sequence (n) at the end of each desired line in your string. Construct the full string with these new line characters, then assign it to the target field. This method ensures that line breaks are correctly rendered when the text is displayed in the NetSuite UI.
Scenario
Users often need to display text across multiple lines within standard NetSuite text area fields. When populating these fields programmatically, a common challenge is ensuring that line breaks are correctly interpreted and rendered. Simply adding a newline character in the script might not always produce the desired multi-line output in the NetSuite user interface.
Solution
To insert new lines in a NetSuite text area field, append the 'backslash n' character sequence (n) at the end of each line within the string you are building. Construct the complete string with these n characters. Assign the final string to the target text area field. The line changes will then take effect and be displayed correctly in the NetSuite UI. It has been observed that when concatenating strings, using the + operator is more reliable than the concat function for including the n character. For example:
var myString = "First line" + "n" + "Second line";
// Assign myString to your text area fieldUsing + ensures the n character is correctly interpreted for line breaks.
