How to Reorganize Your Subsidiary Hierarchy in NetSuite OneWorld

NetSuite's 'Allow Subsidiary Hierarchy to be Modified' preference allows administrators to restructure their OneWorld subsidiary tree.

Short answer

NetSuite OneWorld allows administrators to reorganize the subsidiary hierarchy by enabling the 'Allow Subsidiary Hierarchy to be Modified' preference. This preference, found in General Preferences, makes the Parent Subsidiary field editable, enabling changes to parent-child relationships and even the top-level subsidiary.

Scenario

Organizations using NetSuite OneWorld may need to adjust their subsidiary structure due to mergers, acquisitions, or internal reorganizations. The default NetSuite setup typically locks the subsidiary hierarchy, preventing direct modifications to parent-child relationships. This requires a specific administrative action to unlock the ability to restructure.

Solution

  1. Enable the 'Allow Subsidiary Hierarchy to be Modified' preference: Navigate to Setup > Company > General Preferences. Locate and check the 'Allow Subsidiary Hierarchy to be Modified' box. This preference is typically enabled for a maximum of 30 days, though it can be re-enabled if further modifications are needed.

  2. Once enabled, the 'Parent Subsidiary' field becomes editable for existing subsidiaries. This allows for reassigning parent-child relationships.

  3. To change the top-level subsidiary: Assign a new parent to the current top-level subsidiary, making it a child of another. Alternatively, make a new subsidiary the top-level one by clearing its 'Parent Subsidiary' field. This subsidiary will then become a top-level entity.
