How to Resolve “That Record Does Not Exist” Error on NetSuite Items

This error occurs when Standard Costing is enabled, requiring a Cost Category that is missing from item records due to form customization.

Short answer

The "That record does not exist" error on NetSuite items often occurs when Standard Costing is enabled, making the "Cost Category" field mandatory. If this field was removed from the item's preferred form, items created or imported without it will trigger the error. The solution involves temporarily deactivating Standard Costing, updating the affected items, and then re-activating the feature.

Scenario

When Standard Costing is enabled in NetSuite, the "Cost Category" field becomes a required field for item records. If the "Cost Category" field is subsequently removed from the item's preferred form, any items created or imported after this form customization will be missing the mandatory "Cost Category" value. Attempting to access these items will result in the error message "That record does not exist."

Solution

To resolve the "That record does not exist" error caused by missing Cost Category values on items when Standard Costing is enabled, follow these steps:

  1. Deactivate Standard Costing.

  2. Update the affected items to include a "Cost Category" value. Note that attempting to update items via CSV import while Standard Costing is active and the Cost Category is missing will still return the "That record does not exist" error.

  3. Re-activate Standard Costing once all items have the required "Cost Category" information.
