Understanding SuiteTalk SearchResult Types: recordList vs. searchRowList

NetSuite SuiteTalk web services utilize distinct search result types, recordList and searchRowList, depending on the search complexity.

Short answer

Basic searches in SuiteTalk return recordList, providing full record objects for direct casting. Advanced searches return searchRowList, which contains rows of data. The choice depends on whether complete record objects or specific data rows are needed, with recordList offering direct object manipulation for known types.

Scenario

When performing searches via NetSuite SuiteTalk web services, users may observe that basic searches and advanced searches yield results in different formats. This distinction can lead to questions regarding the appropriate handling and casting of search results, specifically concerning recordList and searchRowList types.

Solution

In NetSuite SuiteTalk, search operations return results using one of two primary SearchResult types: recordList or searchRowList. The type of search performed dictates which SearchResult type is returned. Basic searches store results in recordList. This occurs because the entire records are available, enabling the direct casting of results into a specific record type when the type is known. For example, SalesOrder results can directly fit into an array of SalesOrder objects. Advanced searches store results in searchRowList. Unlike recordList, searchRowList does not allow for direct casting of results into specific record types, as it provides rows of data rather than complete record objects.
