Why Can’t I Inline Edit a Custom Field on NetSuite Sales Orders?

A custom field may not be inline editable on a NetSuite saved search if it is hidden on the associated transaction forms, preventing direct data entry.

Short answer

To enable inline editing for a custom field on NetSuite sales orders, ensure the field is visible and accessible on all custom transaction forms used for sales orders. Inline editing functionality requires the field to be present and unhidden on the relevant transaction forms to allow direct modification from saved searches.

Scenario

A user encountered an issue where a custom field could not be inline edited on a saved search displaying sales orders. Curiously, the same custom field was successfully inline editable when viewed on a saved search for purchase orders, indicating a record-type specific configuration problem.

Solution

The inability to inline edit the custom field on sales orders was traced to its visibility settings. The custom field was hidden on one or more custom transaction forms actively used for sales orders. Inline editing functionality in NetSuite mandates that the field must be accessible and visible on the relevant transaction form. To resolve this, the custom field was made visible on all sales order forms where it was previously hidden, which restored its inline editability.
