Why Do Pending Approval Sales Orders Not Show Backordered Quantity in NetSuite?
Understand how NetSuite's inventory commitment logic prevents unapproved sales orders from generating backorder quantities.
Short answer
Pending approval Sales Orders in NetSuite do not display backordered quantities because they do not commit inventory. NetSuite's system logic dictates that only approved sales orders can reserve stock, and consequently, only committed stock can lead to a backorder situation if insufficient inventory is available.
Scenario
Users attempting to view backordered quantities on Sales Orders that are still in a 'Pending Approval' status may find that these quantities are not reflected. This situation arises because the system's inventory management rules prevent stock commitment for unapproved transactions.
Solution
NetSuite's design prevents Sales Orders from committing inventory until they have been fully approved. Consequently, if a Sales Order has not yet been approved, it cannot reserve stock, and therefore, it cannot create a backorder situation. Backordered quantities are only calculated and displayed for Sales Orders that have committed stock, which only occurs after approval.
