How to Display Comparison Values in a NetSuite Custom KPI Portlet

Configure your NetSuite saved search and KPI portlet settings to correctly display period-over-period comparison data for key performance indicators.

Short answer

To enable comparison columns in a NetSuite Custom KPI portlet, ensure your underlying saved search does not include a date field as a search criterion. Instead, add the date field as a filter. Additionally, the saved search must have exactly one field with a summary type. This configuration allows the KPI portlet's date settings to correctly apply and display comparative data.

Scenario

Users attempting to create a custom Key Performance Indicator (KPI) portlet in NetSuite may find that it only displays values for the current period, leaving comparison columns empty. Even when a saved search is selected and range/compare range criteria are configured in the portlet setup, the 'Previous' and 'Change' columns remain blank. This issue prevents the desired period-over-period comparison.

Solution

To ensure a custom KPI portlet correctly displays comparison figures, the underlying saved search must be configured with specific settings. The following conditions must be met within the saved search:

  1. Do not include a date field as a search criteria in the saved search, as this overrides the KPI portlet's date settings.

  2. Add the date field as a FILTER in the saved search. The KPI portlet will then apply its configured date settings as the date filter in the search.

  3. Ensure that exactly ONE field in the saved search uses a summary type. With this saved search setup, the portlet will correctly utilize the portlet dates within the saved search filter and display the comparison figures as intended.
