How Do Sourced Fields Behave in NetSuite and Affect Original Data?
Understanding NetSuite sourced field behavior is crucial for data integrity, as these fields are designed to display values without altering their original source.
Short answer
In NetSuite, a sourced field typically has "Store Value" set to false, meaning it only displays values from its source without saving changes made directly to the sourced field itself. Consequently, modifying a sourced field on a record will not propagate those changes back to the original field from which the data was sourced.
Scenario
Users often wonder about the data flow and integrity when working with sourced fields in NetSuite. Specifically, there is a common question regarding whether modifications made to a field that sources its value from another record will impact the original source field.
Solution
When configuring a sourced field in NetSuite, it is typically set with the "store value false" option. This configuration ensures that the field's value is exclusively derived from its designated source. Any attempts to manually change the value within the sourced field on a record will not be saved, nor will these changes affect the original field from which the data was sourced. The sourced field acts as a display mechanism, reflecting the source's current value without establishing a two-way synchronization or write-back capability.
