How to Resolve ‘Unexpected Error’ When Switching NetSuite Transaction Forms to Advanced PDF Printing?
Users may encounter errors when converting an existing NetSuite transaction form from basic to advanced printing, preventing access to PDF templates and printing.
Short answer
To resolve 'An unexpected error has occurred' when switching a NetSuite transaction form to Advanced PDF printing, create a new transaction form based on a default NetSuite form. Configure this new form for 'Advanced' printing from the outset, then set it as the preferred form. This approach bypasses the underlying issue with converting existing forms.
Scenario
A NetSuite Transaction Form, initially configured for 'Basic Printing', was later switched to 'Advanced' printing. This change resulted in an 'An unexpected error has occurred' message when attempting to print from the record or edit any Advanced PDF templates of that type. While reverting the form to 'Basic' temporarily allowed access to the HTML template, previewing with 'Advanced' printing still triggered a `java.lang.NullPointerException`.
Solution
To permanently resolve this issue, a new Transaction Form of the specific transaction type must be created.
Create a new Transaction Form, basing it on one of the default NetSuite forms (from locked bundles).
Before saving the new transaction form, ensure its printing type is set to 'Advanced' from the onset.
Set this newly created form as the preferred form for the transaction type.
Save the transaction form. This process allows for the successful use of Advanced PDF templates for the transaction type without further errors.
