How to Restrict NetSuite Menu Options by Role Using Center Tabs?

NetSuite users can control menu item visibility for specific roles by leveraging customized center tabs, enhancing role-based access control.

Short answer

NetSuite allows menu option restriction only at the center tab level, not by center category. To achieve role-based menu visibility, administrators can create duplicate center tabs—one with the desired menu option and one without—and assign them to specific roles. Naming both tabs identically ensures a seamless user experience.

Scenario

Organizations often need to customize user access to specific menu options within NetSuite based on their assigned roles. While restricting access by center category is not directly supported, the goal is to prevent certain roles from seeing or accessing particular menu items within a broader center tab like 'Transactions'.

Solution

NetSuite enables menu option restriction exclusively at the center tab level, not by center category. To implement role-specific menu visibility, administrators can follow these steps:

  1. Create two distinct center tabs, for example, two “Transactions” center tabs. One tab should include the specific menu option to be restricted, and the other should exclude it.

  2. Assign these customized center tabs to the relevant user roles. Roles requiring access to the menu option will be assigned the tab that includes it, while roles that should not see it will be assigned the tab without it.

  3. To maintain a consistent user interface, name both center tabs identically. This ensures that users will not perceive them as different tabs, even though their underlying menu options vary by role.
